"After years of hard work, I was honored with a state award for excellence…. Today, I am proud to mention that I have earned a name for myself in the art of jali work."
"Hello. My name is Gulam Rasool and I was born in the year 1940. My city is so rich in traditional marble sculpting that anyone visiting would never get enough of the exotic beauty and artistic work of the people here. I belong to a family who has a long relationship with the art of sculpting marble. I became interested in this rich work and started helping my father in his work. My father was an expert in marble sculpting and jali (openwork). He was honored with the state award for excellence in marble sculpting in 1979. I learned a lot from him and chose to follow his path.
"After working with my father for a long time, I ventured out on my own. I experimented with different designs and gave a new dimension to the traditional styles. At that time, there were very few tourists coming to India and all we got from a hard day's work were a few bucks from selling souvenir items made of soapstone. Over the years, however, things have changed as far as our work’s popularity is concerned. More and more tourists come to India to learn about our exquisite art. And this has helped artisans a lot.
"After years of hard work, I was honored with a state award for excellence in marble handicrafts. Today, I am proud to mention that I have earned a name for myself in the art of jali work. The opportunity to work with Novica is unique and I am delighted to be associated with them. Now I can show my work to the world."

Dear Mr. Rasool - We purchased your soapstone turtle pair and cannot say enough about your talented artistry. The turtle is my favorite creature, and I buy many items with the turtle: for wisdom, longevity, its beauty and playful shyness. A turtle represents that is is good to 'stick out your neck a bit,"" while being able to retreat to safety - I learned that by watching these amazing creatures, I am like the turtle. Thank you, thank you, thank you for you talent, artistry, and passion. Thank you for being a ""turtle"" yourself as well, by selling your gloriously created items. Our next purchase from you will be the ""Mother Owl."" a mother watching over her owlet. May you and your family be blessed with happiness, health, and prosperity! Kind regards, Maggie and Karl Buchmann

I received a hand-carved jewelry box made of soapstone that was so spectacular I was speechless when I opened the box. I always try to support artists and buy as many handcrafted things as I can, but I don't think I've ever bought anything handcrafted that looked this amazing. It is truly a work of art. I couldn't wait to proudly display it. Gulam Rasool has got such an amazing skill and I'm so happy he has a way to share his gifts with people so far from where he lives. I will treasure this box for the rest of my life. Thank you!

I purchased the Mother Owl sculpture as a gift for my sister. It is even more incredible in person than in the photographs. The quality of the craftsmanship and the intricacy of the carving made this as much of a pleasure to give as to get. Thank you, Mr. Rasool, for allowing me to give a gift of such beauty!

Thank you Gulam Rasool for your excellent craftsmanship and your exceptional eye for detail, Today my long awaited 'Mother Elephant' arrived and she exceeds all my expectations. Thank you!
I received this sculpture today in excellent condition. This was a very fast turn-over time from the day I ordered it. And the two soapstone elephant sculptures are charming and unique. I planned them for a May birthday gift to my son, but I can't wait! We'll just have to celebrate it this weekend. Thank you for all your skill and concern. Alice Sprickman N.H. USA
Mr. Rasool: When I was in Hawai'i, I saw the jali work collected by Doris Duke at her home ""Shangri La'. She had been so impressed by the artwork of the Taj Mahal. The image of a large jali screen in a window stuck with me, and then I was so happy when I discovered your perpetuation of the jali style in soapstone. I've been giving my three sons your boxes and candle holders for events in their lives. I especially love the Nautilus--the way the candles flicker through the slots is very mysterious. My oldest son received ""The Palace"" most recently. We love the effect that if you put it in a sunny place the light shines through the jali work and the shadows create a miniature palace on the table. My other most favorite piece is the plate which rests in the window of my bedroom. The afternoon sunlight shines through the stars! I also have a statue of the three elephants each inside the other. I find looking at your work both inspiring and relaxing. I am a teacher and I hope you are passing on your knowledge to young artists so that the jali style is perpetuated. Thank you for your art!
Greeting Mr. Rasool. I just finished unwrapping ""Elephant Duet"" and placed them with my other elephant you crafted. I have absolutely no idea how you manage to sculpted a perfect elephant inside an elephant inside an elephant, but I am certainly glad you can! I look forward to purchasing more of your works and I believe there is at least one more elephant I need for my collection. Thank you for sharing your talents with the world.
Initially I bought a soapstone box called ""wings"". I was so impressed that I bought another box called ""white ivy"" for a good friend (who absolutely adores it btw). I liked the white ivy box so much, I ended up buying one for myself as well.
